BradyWatch: la la la la la I can’t hear you guns are bad did I mention that I don’t like guns

Poor Paul Helmke, he just can’t let peaceful people gather together to celebrate a shared interest without pulling out sad stories of unarmed victims murdered by thugs. What a killjoy!

And his stories are stupid anyway. Here’s an example:

In 1998, [Peter] Krenn’s 16-year-old son, Erik, was dropping off a buddy on Rock Hill’s South Jones Avenue when four guys carjacked Erik. Erik was shot with a Saturday Night Special handgun, and died….

In Paul Helmke’s ideal world, those thugs would not have had guns. But I fail to see how this would have resulted in any better outcome for Erik Krenn, who could easily still have been carjacked and killed regardless of what his assailants had chosen as their weapons. Would Paul sleep better knowing that Erik had been fatally stabbed or beaten to death with a tire iron?

Paul ends with this:

While the NRA convention will get a lot of attention, it’s victims’ voices, like these, that deserve to be heard the loudest. Otherwise, the number of victims of gun violence will continue to grow, unabated.

Really? The number of victims of gun violence is growing unabated? News to me. Let’s see what the CDC has to say about that:

Yeah, those gun deaths sure are growing unabated. Whatever are we going to do about the rapidly declining gun death rate? Better pass a law!

  1. According to the writers of Freakonomics, the fall on your graph is mostly due to Roe v. Wade. A lot of unwanted babies haven’t been raised by mothers not ready for them and didn’t become criminals 15-20 years later, right where your graph goes down.

  2. Interesting. That sounds like a book I might like to read.

  3. The first true “three-strikes” law was passed in 1993. Fits the graphs nicely. By the way, the reason there are gun control efforts is because a population is easier to control if they don’t have weapons. Our Founding Fathers knew this, which is why its a Constitutional right to bear arms and have a militia should there be an enemy either foreign or domestic. Tyranny requires self defense, as does crime.
