Tell us how you really feel

It’s not new, but I just discovered the eloquently-titled essay “Fuck the South“. The author voices a variety of grievances with the south, from its respect for the second amendment to its net receipt of federal funds to its intolerant attitude toward homosexuality. The gay thing isn’t entirely wrong, but everything else is.

All that bullshit about what you think they meant by the Second Amendment giving you the right to keep your assault weapons in the glove compartment because you didn’t bother to read the first half of the fucking sentence?

It’s hard to know where to start. We have the notion that rights are not pre-existing and innate, but instead given to the people once codified by government. We have fearmongering about “assault weapons” and concealed carry. And we have the bunk collective rights theory, that, to be fair, at the time hadn’t yet been smacked down by the Supreme Court in D.C. vs Heller.

Next up, we have some of the vaunted liberal tolerance:

All those Federal taxes you love to hate? It all comes from us and goes to you, so shut up and enjoy your fucking Tennessee Valley Authority electricity and your fancy highways that we paid for.

[…]

Nine of the ten states that get the most federal fucking dollars and pay the least… can you guess? Go on, guess. That’s right, motherfucker, they’re red states.

That’s funny, don’t liberals typically think that federal money should flow from the rich who can afford it to the poor who need help? That’s basically what’s happening here: richer northeastern liberal states are being made to pay for the poorer southern conservative ones. Why is this to be lauded at the individual level but reviled at the state level? Or do liberals blister at any poor conservatives getting their money?

This is of course the problem with coercive redistribution: since the giver has no option not to give, he can become bitter if the receiver is deemed unworthy, and the receiver can resent the giver if the aid is unwanted or comes with strings attached.

Why should bitter northeastern blue-staters be forced to support the southerners they hate so much? I can guarantee that red-staters certainly don’t appreciate the federal agencies, mandates, and regulations that accompany the money. Let’s cut the chain and everyone will be happy; residents of wealthier blue states will keep their own money and residents of poorer red states will have the less government intervention they’re always clamoring for. Everybody can live how they like and nobody has to care about people they find odious.

Funny the way liberty works.
